The End of Organized Religion

I know many of my Atheist Friends would love to see the end of organized religion.  This is also my desire but maybe for different reasons.  Since I have more knowledge of Christianity than other religions, I will address it first.  I think that what I am about to say would pertain to most other religions as well.

Think for a moment about what a single church represents.  It resembles a small country in as much as it has a leader, governing body and a constituency .  It taxes its people in the form of a tithe and offerings in order to financially support its government.  The money goes towards salaries , buildings and programs.  It is not unusual for supporters who upon their deaths to leave property and / or money to the church as well.

It is estimated there are over 1 million Christian Churches worldwide today.  Their property and monetary assets could easily be over 1 trillion dollars.  Their yearly combined income is over 400 billion dollars . http://library.generousgiving.org/page.asp?sec=4&page=161

Most church leaders will tell you the main purpose of the church is to spread the “Good News about Jesus Christ”.  I think most people of the civilized world have heard the good news.  If they want to know more, and don’t have a bible, they can get one for free from many hotels/motels worldwide.

So think of the good that could be done with 1 trillion dollars in the bank and revenues of over 400 billion dollars each year !  World starvation could be eliminated and the rest could be used for education and medical programs.

And this revenue is if we just eliminated all christian churches.  Add to this Mosques, Jewish Synagogues , Hindu Temples, etc etc.

  1. I once read that the Catholic Church is the single wealthiest real estate owner in the world, with more property than any other corporation in the world.

    MacDonald’s was second!

    Make you think, doesn’t it?
